The NHS AI Lab
The NHS AI Lab is accelerating the safe, ethical and effective adoption of AI-driven technologies in Health and Social Care. It is part of the NHS Transformation Directorate, which unites colleagues from across NHS Digital, NHS England and NHS Improvement and the Department of Health and Social Care behind a common goal: to drive innovation at scale in order to improve health and care for people and support staff.
We are working to accelerate the recovery of routine services and tackle the backlog by:
Better use of data and analytics
Creating a learning NHS and care system
The NHS Transformation Directorate will give a voice to front line staff, patients and service users. We will make their great ideas a reality; we will test pilot new ways of operating that can support them; and we will spread the learning by scaling the adoption of successful pilots at a sustainable pace.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was established in 2006 to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.
- Fund, support and deliver high quality research that benefits the NHS, public health and social care
- Engage and involve patients, carers and the public in order to improve the reach, quality and impact of research
- Attract, train and support the best researchers to tackle the complex health and care challenges of the future
- Invest in world-class infrastructure and a skilled delivery workforce to translate discoveries into improved treatments and services
- Partner with other public funders, charities and industry to maximise the value of research to patients and the economy.
In addition to its national role, the NIHR supports applied health research for the direct and primary benefit of people in low- and middle-income countries, using UK aid from the UK government.
Health Innovation Network
The Health Innovation Network is the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) for south London. We are an NHS team that works flexibly across the health and care sector, industry, academia and in partnership with south London residents to speed up innovation and improve care. As an AHSN we are uniquely established to help innovators navigate the complex health and care system and we work with our members (academia and local health and care teams in south London), national commissioners (NHS England & Improvement, Office for Life Sciences), industry and the third sector to make sure south Londoners benefit from innovations on a daily basis.
The AHSN Network
Each AHSN covers a distinct geography and tailors its offer to suit the needs of its local health and care systems. Nationally, the AHSNs work together as a connected ‘network of networks’ to deliver transformation at scale.
The work of AHSNs is driven by three imperatives: improving health, supporting safer systems of care, and generating economic growth.
DigitalHealth.London is a collaborative programme delivered by MedCity, and London’s three Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs). Through its four main programmes of work, the Accelerator, Launchpad, Generator and Digital Pioneer Fellowship, it enables health tech entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals turn the idea of digital innovation into tangible improvements for staff and patients. DigitalHealth.London is supported by NHS England (London) and the Mayor’s Office. The Accelerator is supported by the additional partner, CW+, and is part-funded through the European Regional Development Fund. The Digital Pioneer Fellowship Programme is supported by Boehringer Ingelheim (BI).
National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
NICE’s role is to improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other public health and social care services. This is done by producing evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners. As a partner on this project, NICE will host the secretariat for the service, provide guidance on the pathways for Health Technology Assessment in England and expertise in generating robust evidence that demonstrates a technology’s clinical and cost effectiveness within the health system.
The Medicines and Healthcare-products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), is the UK’s regulator of medicines, medical devices and blood components for transfusion, responsible for ensuring their safety, quality and effectiveness.
The agency is responsible for:
- ensuring that medicines, medical devices and blood components for transfusion meet applicable standards of safety, quality and efficacy
- ensuring that the supply chain for medicines, medical devices and blood components is safe and secure
- promoting international standardisation and harmonisation to assure the effectiveness and safety of biological medicines
- helping to educate the public and healthcare professionals about the risks and benefits of medicines, medical devices and blood components, leading to safer and more effective use
- supporting innovation and research and development that’s beneficial to public health
- influencing UK, EU and international regulatory frameworks so that they’re risk-proportionate and effective at protecting public health
As a partner on this project the MHRA will ensure that guidance supports the regulation of software as a medical device.
Health Research Authority (HRA)
The HRA’s role is to protect and promote patients and the public in health and social care research. As a partner on this project, the HRA will ensure that the service effectively supports research projects, and that we collectively provide clear advice on the pathway to develop and deploy data-driven technologies and AI.
Care Quality Commission (CQC)
CQC’s role is to monitor, inspect and regulate health and care services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety. CQC publish findings, including performance ratings to help people choose care. As a partner on this project, CQC will ensure the service is helpful for those wanting to know more about adopting these technologies in health and social care.
The AI Centre is led by King’s College London and Guy’s and Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, alongside 10 NHS Trusts, four Universities, a number of multi-national industry partners including Siemens, NVIDIA, IBM, GSK, 10 UK-based SME’s and the Health Innovation Network, and was established in February 2019 as part of the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. At the AI Centre, we are developing technology that allows us to access large volumes of well-curated clinical data in a controlled environment, with the appropriate technical architecture, governance, and clinical expertise. Our two platforms, AIDE (AI Deployment Engine) and FLIP (Federated Learning & Interoperability Platform), will provide access to high-quality electronic health data for the purpose of deployment and development of AI Technology. Scaling AI across 10 NHS trusts, it will enable testing and deployment of AI in clinical practice and share data in a way that is safe and secure. We are also creating applications that will drive innovation in healthcare and allow for the fundamental redesign of clinical pathways to improve outcomes and reduce costs.
