Over the last year, the lab launched key programmes including two rounds of the AI in Health and Care Award, the AI Ethics Initiative, the AI Skunkworks, the AI in Imaging programme, and several regulatory projects. Indra will update on the progress of the NHS AI Lab’s programmes and the ways they support innovators and the health and care system. Indra will also outline ways the health and care community can engage with the work of the NHS AI Lab and the future of health AI in the UK.

CHALLENGE 5

How can we evaluate and scale promising AI- driven technologies?

The AI in Health and Care Award is a £140m fund run by the Accelerated Access Collaborative in collaboration with NHSX and NIHR. Funding is available over three years through a competitive process for AI technologies that support the aims of the NHS Long Term Plan and is a key programme within the £250m NHS AI Lab.

For this session we will outline how we are testing and evaluating AI technologies through case studies of two companies who are winners of Round 1 of the AI Award.

Oxford HeartBeat is a Phase 3 technology which will be undertaking their first real-world testing in health and social care settings to develop evidence of efficacy and preliminary proof of effectiveness, including evidence for routes to implementation to enable more rapid adoption. Brainomix is a phase 4 technology in which they will facilitate initial systems adoption of the AI technologies with market authorisation into the NHS, evaluating the AI technology within clinical or operational pathways to determine efficacy or accuracy, and clinical and economic impact.

We would like to welcome questions and feedback from the attendees on the case studies and approach we are taking to generate evidence and scale technologies.
